The Hazlewood Act
The Hazlewood Act is a State of Texas benefit that provides qualified Veterans, spouses, and dependent children with an education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition exemption, including most fee charges, at public institutions of higher education in Texas. While these benefits do NOT include living expenses, books, or supply fees, they can be used in conjunction with financial aid (grants, loans, scholarships).
You can view the eligibility requirements on the Texas Veterans Commission website to see if you qualify for this type of aid.
Steps to Applying for the Hazlewood Exemption
Depending on your relationship to the veteran (whether that is yourself, your dependent or your spouse), there may be different documentation that is needed to complete your file. Check out the steps listed below to get started.
Remember that you must apply for the Hazlewood Exemption every semester.
For Renewal Applicants
Submit Required Documentation
Hazlewood documentation needs to be submitted every term for which a student would like to have the exemption applied.
After the first semester of using the exemption at Brazosport College, applicants must submit the Texas Hazlewood Act Exemption Application For Continued Enrollment.
Please Note: This is only for consecutive subsequent semesters after an initial application has been turned in and approved. If you have missed a long semester (Spring or Fall) you must complete the initial application again.
Check your Brazosport College Email and MyBC Account
Once we receive your application, you might receive emails from Brazosport College indicating if we had any issues or if additional documentation is needed. It's important to check your myBC account and your Brazosport College Email regularly for updates. The sooner we get missing documents from you, the sooner we can finalize your file.
